Seat Belt Certification & ECE R16 Compliance
Seat belts are safety-critical components designed to retain occupants in their seats during a collision and significantly reduce the risk of injury.
At Certified Seat Belts, our seat belt systems are manufactured using ECE R16-compliant components, the recognised European regulation governing vehicle seat belt performance, testing and approval.
Complete seat belt assemblies supplied by us include certification labelling for traceability, confirming the belt has been manufactured and approved in accordance with applicable European safety standards.
We supply seat belt systems and components to installers, manufacturers, van converters and vehicle builders across the UK, supporting both trade customers and individual buyers.
What Is ECE R16?
ECE Regulation 16 is the European regulation that specifies the requirements for seat belts and restraint systems used in road vehicles.
This regulation covers areas such as:
- Seat belt strength and durability
- Locking and retraction mechanisms
- Webbing performance
- Safety testing under load conditions
Seat belts approved under this regulation carry an E-mark certification label, confirming they have passed the required approval testing.
Understanding the E-Mark Certification Label
Certified seat belts carry a small approval label stitched onto the webbing.
This label provides important information about the belt’s certification and traceability.
A capital “E” marks ECE approval to Regulation 16
The number after the “E” marks the county where it is tested/approved.
E1 – Germany, E2 – France, E3 – Italy, E4 – Netherlands, E5 – Sweden, E6 – Belgium, E9 – Spain, E11 – Britain, E12 – Austria, E13 – Luxembourg, E17 – Finland, E18 – Denmark, E21 – Portugal, E23 – Greece, E24 – Ireland.
The next line of numbers indicates the approval/ certificate number.
The meaning of “Ar4m” and other symbols are explained below:
A = 3 or 4 point mounting lap and diagonal belt. B = 2 point mounting lap belt. r = Seat belt with retractor. 3 = Automatic locking retractor. 4 = Emergency locking retractor. m = Multiple sensitivity. S = Special type belt. 4N = Lower sensitivity retractor.
Certification of Seat Belt Components
Complete seat belt assemblies supplied by Certified Seat Belts include certification labelling where applicable.
Some individual components may be supplied separately for installation or replacement purposes.
For example:
Seat belt buckles
Seat belt extenders
Mounting components
When sold individually, these components may not carry individual certification labels, but they are manufactured using the same ECE R16-compliant components used within approved seat belt systems.
These components are intended for use within compatible seat belt systems and vehicle installations.
